How To Be A Hero - Why Do We Love Heroes So Much?
Why do we enjoy Heroes so much? Why do we watch films and read books and listen to tales of men and women who overcome difficult conditions? Who measure into the battle and struggle valiantly? Who confront their fears and display courage, even when the odds are against them?Why?Because that's who we all aspire to be.Joseph Campbell outlined a common narrative that is followed closely by personalities from ancient mythological tales through modern day films. He believed that, not just are people drawn to this narrative, but that all of us have the capacity to live it.Perhaps you have heard of Joseph Campbell?Allow me to introduce you.Joseph Campbell was a 20th Century mythologist, educator, and philosopher. acting scripts plays skits heroes superheroes was a powerful thought leader and author who wrote many books. As a college student, I had a part-time job working for the Joseph Campbell Foundation, where I was introduced to his thoughts.There is a movie, Finding Joe, which investigates Campbell's ideas about the Hero's Journey. I strongly recommend it! It includes modern day philosophers, spiritual leaders and authors like Deepak Chopra and Ken Robinson in addition to musicians, professional athletes, and my old manager from the Foundation.In the film, writer Alen Cohen states"We are not different from the characters we see in our stories and in our books. They are us. It's 1 journey."The hero's journey is defined by a few important elements. First, there's a separation and a call to adventure. The protagonist embarks on a journey to an unknown or unknown place (physically or emotionally/spiritually). On the wayhe experiences challenges and temptations, and he should face death (either physically or metaphorically). It's by overcoming that experience that they are reborn and transformed. Then they've earned the title of"Hero."There are whole books written about it, so I am summarizing here. But the point is that the narrative line is the same, even though the details could be dramatically different.The Creative And Entrepreneurial CallThere are lots of distinct"calls to experience" that will jump start a hero's journey. And we could experience it in a lifetime. From the film, a few of the instigators were physical challenges such as a loony skateboarding trick. Sometimes they are thrust upon you, like a severe medical condition or tragic encounter. There may be geographic separation, like moving to a different place, culture or country.
